A do-it-yourself kit is about $20 for a short-term test and about $50 for a long-term test, according to the Florida Department of Health. A certified professional 48-hour test is commonly about $100 to $250 in the Tampa Bay sources below, and ProMatcher’s Florida average is $170.17. As a home-inspection add-on, published Tampa figures run about $50 to $250. The table has every number, with the date on the source. See the price table.
This page is only about the test. What a mitigation system costs is a different job, covered in the 2026 mitigation price guide. Radon Mitigation Tampa is a referral service. We do not perform the test, and we do not set the fee.
Radon test prices in Tampa at a glance
Every row is a published figure we retrieved on October 22, 2026. We did not average them into a new “Tampa price.” Where a page had no date, the date column says so.

| Angi (Tampa radon testing cost)High outlier | All test types | $145–$714 | $421 | 2026-09-21 |
Why Angi sits higher: its Tampa page, updated September 21, 2026, is presented as AI-generated. The $421 average folds in digital monitors and large-home professional tests. It is the high outlier. We do not treat it as the typical Tampa fee. Without that row, the professional figures in the table cluster around $100 to $250, with ProMatcher’s Florida average at $170.17. One local guide also lists charcoal at $75 to $150, DIY at $15 to $40, and alpha-track at $25 to $50. We cite those prices only. That same guide’s EPA zone labels are wrong, and we do not use them.
DIY vs professional tests
DIY kits (charcoal and alpha track)
The Department’s line is around $20 for a short-term kit and around $50 for a long-term kit. Reliable kits are listed with the National Radon Proficiency Program or the National Radon Safety Board, and the kit goes back to a lab. Read whether postage is included. The $15 to $40 and $25 to $50 figures are from the local guide above, not the Department. Methods are compared in DIY versus a professional test.
Professional continuous radon monitor (CRM)
A real-estate short-term test is at least 48 hours: a continuous monitor, or two passive devices together, averaged, per the Department’s home buyer and seller guide. Hourly data is how a tester sees a window or a weather spike. Waypoint, a Tampa inspector, describes a 48-hour monitor test with the report often ready within about 24 hours. That is one example, not a rule. How a Tampa test is booked is the process page.
Digital home monitors
Angi’s page lists digital monitors at $105 to $255. A plug-in consumer monitor is a useful household gadget. It is not a Florida-certified measurement for a purchase contract. Anyone who is paid to test has to be certified by the Department of Health, and the report has to come from that certified business.
What changes the price
- Home size and a second device. Angi prices professional tests by size from $155 to $710. That span is the outlier row.
- Bundling with a home inspection. Both 2026 Tampa inspection guides list radon as an add-on and say a bundle can cost less than a separate trip.
- A rush report. No sourced table publishes a rush fee. Ask for it in the quote.
- Travel outside core Tampa, including Pasco or Polk. We have no sourced mileage table, so that stays a quote question.
- A post-mitigation retest. One local guide lists $75 to $150. That is a single source, not a survey.
- Long-term versus short-term. A Department long-term follow-up runs over 91 days. The kit price it quotes is about $50, which is the device, not a technician’s time.
Radon testing in a home sale
Is it part of a home inspection?
No. Both March 2026 Tampa inspection guides list it as optional: $100, $150, or $250 in one, and included or $50 to $150 with a $200 high in the other. It is inside the general fee only if the quote says so.
Who pays?
Buyers usually pay, because the test sits with the inspection list they control. That is the custom in these local guides, not a sentence in Florida’s radon statute. Seller and buyer can negotiate it. If the result is high, who pays for mitigation is a second negotiation, covered in who pays for mitigation, how a radon contingency works, and radon in a Florida sale.
How long it takes
At least 12 hours of closed-house conditions, then at least 48 hours of testing, then the report. Using the 24-hour report example above, that arithmetic is about three to four days. Closed-house means windows and outside doors stay shut except for normal entry, through the whole test.
What a valid Florida radon report includes
The September 2026 Florida Department of Health list of certified radon measurement businesses tells consumers to look for four items on the report:
- The name and Florida certification number of the radon business.
- The name and Florida certification number of the individual who performed the test.
- The date and time the test started and the date and time it ended.
- The type of device used.
The list is linked from the Department’s radon professional page. If someone charged a fee and cannot show certification, the Department asks you to report it at 800-543-8279. Ask for the number and check it. We do not certify anyone, and a quote from this site is not a certification.
Free radon test kits in Florida
The Department’s request form was available when we checked on October 22, 2026: Radon Testing Kit Request. The navigation labels it a free kit. The page says to use the kit soon, to mail it back close to 48 hours after you start, to postpone the start if you cannot mail it the day it finishes, and that kits not returned within three months of receipt will not be analyzed. A free charcoal kit is a screening tool. It is not the two-device or continuous-monitor test the Department describes for a real-estate decision.
After the result
Under 4 pCi/L, the Department says test every two years. At 8 pCi/L or more on a short-term test, retest the same way and average. Between 4 and 8, a follow-up can be short or long, and the Department prefers a long-term test over 91 days. If the follow-up is still over 4, consult a certified mitigator. Read what results mean, mitigation, the system price guide, ZIP-level results, and how often to test.
Get a radon test quote with the ZIP, whether this is a sale, and any deadline. We pass that to local certified professionals. You decide whether to hire one.
Radon test cost questions
How much is a radon test in Florida?
The Florida Department of Health says do-it-yourself kits are around $20 for a short-term test and around $50 for a long-term test. ProMatcher's Florida report lists a professional test average of $170.17 for a typical four-bedroom home, with a reported range of $158.84 to $181.49. Tampa-area sources other than Angi cluster roughly from $100 to $250 for a professional test.
Is radon testing included in a home inspection in Tampa?
Usually no. Two 2026 Tampa inspection-cost guides list radon as an optional add-on: about $100 to $250 in one, and included or about $50 to $150 with a high of $200 in the other. Bundling it with the inspection is often cheaper than ordering it alone.
Who pays for the radon test, buyer or seller?
In Tampa Bay sales the buyer usually orders the test with the other inspections. That is common practice, not a Florida statute. Who pays can be negotiated in the contract. Mitigation, if the number is high, is a separate negotiation.
How long does a radon test take?
For a real-estate short-term test, the Florida Department of Health home buyer and seller guide says closed-house conditions for at least 12 hours before the test and during it, then at least 48 hours of testing with either a continuous monitor or two passive devices side by side. One Tampa inspector says a continuous-monitor report is often ready within about 24 hours after pickup. Adding those steps is about three to four days inside the inspection period.
Are DIY radon tests accurate?
The Florida Department of Health says reliable kits are listed with the National Radon Proficiency Program or the National Radon Safety Board, and that the kit has to be mailed to a lab. Used that way, a listed kit is a real measurement. For a sale, use a Florida-certified measurement business. A consumer digital monitor is not that certified test.
How often should I test for radon?
If a result is under 4 pCi/L, the Florida Department of Health says to test the home every two years. Test again after a renovation that changes the foundation or the ventilation, and after a mitigation system is installed.
Can I get a free radon test kit in Florida?
The Florida Department of Health publishes a radon test kit request form. On October 22, 2026 that page was online and the site calls the kit free. The instructions say to mail it back close to 48 hours after you start, and that a kit not returned within three months of receipt is not analyzed. Check the form before you count on it.
